Eco this and Eco that wrapped in plastic.

banana_leaf_natural_wrapSeems that defeats the purpose of organic and natural products when we wrap them in plastic. Long ago when the Indians lived in the Amazon jungle of Peru, South America everything was wrapped in banana leafs. Tamales, fish and sweets were made and sold in banana wrappers. People naturally disposed of the banana wrapper by pitching it into the river. Now when you visit the Amazon jungle the people buy the typical modern candy, soda pop and etc wrapped in plastic. Naturally they still throw the waste into the river.

Now take me for example. I buy natural food or natural products wrapped in plastic. So good for my body, yet so bad for the environment. I guess I feel better about products wrapped in paper.

How many times do I go grocery shopping and forget to take my own big cloth bags to carry the groceries with. Coming home with more plastic bags.

One of the goals of my deodorant is wrapping it in paper and not a big fancy plastic container, because I despise fancy deodorant dispensers. Or disposable razors. More waste.

Currently my deodorant is still in the fine tuning stage. Today I tried my new formula with less baking soda and added tea tree oil. Nice aroma!

Vacuum sealing tomatoes.

Bought some extra tomatoes and preserving them with a vacuum sealer. Someone gave me this sealer and recently I started to store some fresh country grown vegetables in the freeze for winter cooking. Also used it on fresh boiled kale.fresh_tomatoes

Seems to work pretty good. I read that vacuum sealing vegetables and freezing them extends there shelf life by 2 to 3 years. Usually I eat them within 6 months time. Tomatoes are great for crock pot cooking.

Often when rummaging through thrift-shops or garage sales you can find vacuum sealers for nothing. A new one costs around 150.00 dollars.

Vacuum sealing is a lot easier than canning if you are short on time.

Soap Chemistry

“In chemistry, soap is a salt of a fatty acid.[1] Consumers mainly use soaps as surfactants for washing, bathing, and cleaning, but they are also used in textile spinning and are important components of lubricants.

Soaps for cleansing are obtained by treating vegetable or animal oils and fats with a strongly alkaline solution. Fats and oils are composed of triglycerides; three molecules of fatty acids attach to a single molecule of glycerol.[2] The alkaline solution, which is often called lye (although the term “lye soap” refers almost exclusively to soaps made with sodium hydroxide), brings about a chemical reaction known as saponification.”
